BR presents the timing issue for COLD project (see slides)

FE explains that the laser frequency can be chose either based on the SR frequency or on the gun frequency. But there is no value that fits all.

ADE eventually for a 6GeV linac there will be only C-band. 

ADE SwissFEL synchronization and timing is identical to COLD project. Missing part is the synchronization with the SR.

JLR presents MAXIV setup

FE Spring8 has also the same issue. A paper explains the set up. DESY also could help (MKS group) already in contact. Group also known by RHino.

RH please send paper  (ACTION for FE)

QQ will look at MAC slides from DESY and MAXIV

SL meeting at SwissFEL could be precious for timing as well. It could be part of the collaboration with PSI

PB test with existing RF generator not successfull. An option could be a vector frequency generator. Gearge Gautier (GG) will ask suppliers. in principle this tool can set arbitrary phase and frequency at a given trigger. Should be tested and demonstrated at ESRF but there is no time/resources to do it.

BR how it is possible to set phase?

PB at trigger the device should provide freqency and phase.

ADE also used for SLED system

PB if vector generator not OK, then LLRF approach 

ADE for SLAC colleague there is no issue for single bunch, it is feasible

ADE Xbox system from CERN could be used for conditioning. But there is need of a person to set this up at ESRF. ACTION --> 1st COD for COLD LLRF  (Smilar to Nicolas Michel profile)

PB / RH : difficult to find position for LLRF. open poisitions (CDI) will be fully busy for the next 2 years for the 4th harmonic cavity

QQ Soleil collaboration?

PB : GG is leaving, will make front ends for 4th harm cavity. new person for system definition and commissioning 4th.

RH : COD for this position

ADE : COD LLRF for COLD + COD RF power/distribution for COLD  ACTION --> 2nd COD for COLD RF power/distribution  

RH : open position for timing, but difficult to find. FPGA expert seeked

SL : could open one (or more) ISDD COD positions (financed by ISDD) for younger less experienced candidates, one with COLD project in profile (ACTION --> SL to send COLD project small description)

FE : the timing/synchro could be outsourced to an external company (like Soleil) or external laboratory

RH : can work. For the Soleil case company was interested in being able to send the project.

QQ : Buy from DESY / SwissFEL also could be possible. QQ will contact, they may have time to help. Purchase timing for COLD from DESY/SwissFEL. 

QQ : RF CDI positions to be opened as soon as possible. COD positions for COLD as well. 

 

ACTIONS:

FE send paper on Spring8 timing

ADE send profiles for 2 COD to PB

RH/CR think about including COLD in Timing expert profile / open COD positions

Add WP 12 timing. LLRF stays in RF WP. 

SL to send RH a COLD summary for new positions opened

SL to send RH planning and WP structure for COLD project.

 

 

DECISIONS:

after meeting discussion with ADE and FE:

The laser will be synchronized with the Gun and the Phase 1 timing will be a copy of the SwissFEL one, ignoring the requirements to inject in the booster/SR.

The COD-COLD-LLRF will work on Xbox LLRF for conditioning, and on the implementation of the SwissFEL system for Phase1.

Once decision will taken to proceed to phase 2 (300MeV, according to Phase1 results) then we will consider modifactions of timing and LLRF to inject in the booster).
