Hello Yann,
here in the following the result of a meeting we had today to define the works we could envisage for the very next shutdowns.
Summer Shutdown 2026:
The RI accelerating section presently stored at the beginning of Pinj, would be entered in the tunnel at the very beginning of the summer shutdown (July). This is to be confirmed by Marc Dubrulle in the next days if the compressor to open the door is available for that date. Following this action, Benoit Joly could start the moving of the material storage and of the Faraday Cage from Pinj. This would happen during the first days of August (until the 4/5-Aug-2026 at the latest). After this activity, civil works could start, depending on your planning, in Pinj for:
- Providing for the groundings: Installation of an electrical earth connection (installation of an earth pit and earth rods). This for BOTH modulators (2 earth connections)!
- Providing for the additional holes to the tunnel: so far we foresee:
- One hole for S-Band waveguides;
- One hole (small) for the laser;
- One hole for passing the LN2 pipe (only one cryomodule);
- One hole for water passage to be decided.
- Cable trays and water cooling circuit extension from Mod3 to COLD modulators and racks.
The drawings with the details of the position and size of this civil works will be ready before summer and possibly even earlier (already a draft is available). Approval from SAFETY to intervene on the linac tunnel walls will be anticipated from now and officially requested as soon as the drawings are ready.
October Shutdown 2026:
- Installation of the same handling system used for installing the klystron on the top of the Scandinova RF Unit (Mod 0) received last October 2025, on the roof of Pinj above both S- and C-Band modulators. By the way: could you give us the cost of that already installed in Pinj on top of Mod 0?
- Installation of an air extraction system at the LN2 infrastructure location in the modulator hall. This system should trigger on in case of O2 deficiency detection, in order to intervene in case of issues and access the Linac installation independently on the COLD project.
- Temporary water cooling extension from the water panel of Mod 0 for the SATs of COLD S- and C-Band RF-units (S-Band in Jan 2027 and C-Band in Summer 2027).
For the other shutdown activity plannings we need to progress in some detail in the waveguide distribution drawings that will immediately follow when the positions of the different equipment in Pinj and in the tunnel will be detailed (before summer).

Dear Patrick and Safety group,
in our planning for the COLD project, we need to drill some holes in the linac tunnel during the Summer Shutdown 2026.
The additional holes would be for the LASER (at beam height if possible, small diameter), for S-band waveguides (size as the present holes on top of the wall), for LN2 pipes going to the cryomodule (small diameter) and for water cooling (to be confirmed). All the existing holes will also be used.
Please let us know what would be needed (or what is the procedure) to have the authorization for such works.
